All Hallows in the North

I’ve travelled all over Scotland, wanting to capture the feeling of standing somewhere ancient – where the wild, windy landscapes seem to breathe old stories.

All Hallows in the North grew from that feeling – the quiet hush of twilight in the Highlands, the mist clinging to stone walls, and the sense that something unseen lingers just beyond sight. These artworks are my way of exploring the folklore, hauntings, and half-remembered tales that shape Scotland’s darker heart.

Each piece reimagines a story tied to place: not just ghosts, but echoes of the land itself. The series lives in that in-between moment where beauty and unease meet – where an empty glen feels alive, and a ruined castle hums with memory.

My inspiration came from years of exploring Scotland’s landscapes — from remote Highland glens to storm-beaten coastlines. Though I’m not originally from Scotland, I’ve called it home for nearly fifteen years, and its wild beauty has become part of my creative language. The sound of wind through the pines, the salt of the sea, and the comfort of a warm fire after a long walk have all found their way into this work. Each image began as a question: what if the old stories were still unfolding – and where might they be happening today?

Some of the landscapes that shaped the series include:

  • Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Kirkyard, where the faithful Bobby keeps his eternal vigil.
  • Orkney’s rugged shores, haunted by the sea-born terror of the Nuckelavee.
  • The Highland birch woods, where the Baobhan Sith dances by moonlight.
  • Castle Tioram, standing silent against the tide, watching centuries drift past.

Visually, All Hallows in the North balances the natural and the spectral – soft light against storm, stillness against movement. Though each image stands on its own, together they form a northern dreamscape: a Scotland both real and imagined, seen through the veil of folklore.

This collection is both a love letter and a lament – to the wild beauty of the North, to its stories, and to the way darkness makes the light seem all the more precious.
